PDC Bits May Soon Become the Industry Leaders in Geothermal Drilling Too
/The reason why geothermal drilling is not as popular as other industries yet is the fact that hard rock, fractured formations, and high temperatures pose huge challenges for the drillers. However, the good news is, technology developed for industries such as oil and gas through significant research and testing may lay the foundation stone for geothermal drilling too.
It has been observed that the technologies used for oil and gas drilling can also be used on geothermal drilling, and the equipment can also be shared among the industries. If we dive into this topic further, we will realize that even though PDC bits have been used across various drilling industries for quite some time now, they have not yet been adopted for geothermal drilling citing reliability issues and huge purchase costs.
A recent field demonstration conducted by the Sandia Geothermal Research Department, however, has drawn our attention towards the possibility of advanced synthetic diamond drill bits being suitable for geothermal drilling. The test witnessed two commercially available PDC bits drilling granitic formations with a way better rate of penetration and also, a better bit life. These drilling trials also demonstrated that PDC bit drilling technology has matured for applicability to geothermal drilling.
Rockpecker has been manufacturing high-quality drilling tools in the UK and delivering them to our clients across the globe for quite some time now. We have mastered the art of transforming a piece of hardened steel into one of the most robust rock drilling tools in the world. Our in-house team of design engineers constantly works on coming up with high performance PDC bit designs for geothermal drilling every now and then and we aren’t stopping anytime soon.
